Routes to Residency in Mexico

Permanent Residency (Residente Permanente)

Permanent residency offers an indefinite stay in Mexico and comes with a wider range of benefits, including the right to work, access to national healthcare, and the ability to own property. It also provides a clear pathway to Mexican citizenship.

Pathways to Permanent Residency

There are several routes to obtain permanent residency:

  • After Temporary Residency: The most common pathway is to apply after you have held a temporary residency visa for four consecutive years.
  • Family Ties: You can apply for permanent residency after just two years if you are married to a Mexican citizen.

Immediate Residency

You can also apply for permanent residency directly if you meet specific financial thresholds, often referred to as a “retiree” or “financially independent” visa.

Financial Requirements

To qualify immediately, you must demonstrate a significantly higher level of financial solvency. The exact amounts vary by consulate and are subject to change, but are generally based on one of these two options:

  • Monthly Income: You must prove a stable monthly income of approximately $3,145 USD for the last six months. This income must be from a verifiable source like a pension or foreign salary.
  • Savings/Investments: You must show a verified balance of approximately $157,000 USD in savings or investments over the last 12 months.

Important Final Note

Remember, these financial requirements are updated annually. Always confirm the latest figures with the specific Mexican consulate where you plan to apply.

Key Routes to Residency in Mexico

This guide provides a clear overview of the main pathways to obtaining temporary residency in Mexico. We’ll break down the requirements and show you how to start your journey to a new life.

Temporary Residency (Residente Temporal)

This is the most common residency visa, typically valid for 1–4 years and renewable annually. The most frequent ways to qualify include:

Financial Solvency

This is a popular route for retirees and those with remote income. You must demonstrate stable finances through one of two options:

  • Income-based: Show a regular monthly income of approximately USD 4,300–4,400 (net).
  • Savings-based: Provide proof of USD 150,200 or more in verified bank or investment accounts.

Other Pathways

There are several other ways to qualify for a temporary residency visa:

  • Job offer: A Mexican employer can apply for your visa on your behalf.
  • Property ownership: You can apply if you own real estate in Mexico valued at around USD 586,000.
  • Investment: Make capital investments in a Mexican company totaling about USD 293,000.
  • Student or academic purposes: For those enrolled in an official Mexican educational program.
  • Family unity: If you have a close relative who is a Mexican citizen or a resident (spouse, parent, or child), you may be eligible.

Final Note

Remember, these figures and requirements can change, so it’s always best to consult with the nearest Mexican consulate or a legal professional for the most current information.

It is common for many people to feel disappointed when Mexican authorities grant them temporary residency, especially if their initial goal was permanent residency.

However, it’s important to understand that, in practice, temporary residency allows you to do most of the things you could with permanent residency, with very few differences. The distinctions are minimal, and we can explore them in a future article.

The most important thing is that temporary residency is an excellent and solid first step toward legally settling in Mexico.

You are Temporary resident and want to become Permanent due to financial solvency

This are the amounts to be met:

Investors: Proof of investments or bank accounts with a monthly average balance equivalent to 25,000 times the current daily value of the Unit of Measurement and Update (UMA) over the last 12 months.

Pensioners: Documents showing that you receive monthly income or pension free of taxes equivalent to 500 times the UMA for the last 6 months.

This is the official measurement used by the government: Unit of Measurement and Update (UMA).
Daily value in 2025: $113.14 MXN

So, if we do the math:
Investors: 25,000 x $113.14 (UMA value) = $2,828,500 MXN,
Divided by $18 (average exchange rate to US dollars) = $157,138.89 USD
That’s the average amount you would need to maintain over the last 12 months.

Or, if you are receiving a pension:
500 x $113.14 (UMA value) = $56,570 MXN,
Divided by $18 = $3,142.78 USD
That’s the minimum monthly income you should have received in pension over the last 6 months.

Renewing your resident card

It is very important to renew your residence card, if you let it expire you will be fine by immigration and depending on the timeyou let pass, you could lose your residence and you ´ll have to start the process all over again.

You can start one month prior to the expiration day shown in your card. Remember in Mexico the position of the days, month, year are diferent from other countries,. Here are in this order DD/MM/YYYY. Day, Month Year, so dont get confuse and stick to the expiration date in your card according to this order.

You need to go to the nearest immigration office with your passport, residence card, proof of address and paperwork and submit the renewal in time. You can make a one, two or three year renewal. It will take from 1 week up to a month, depending on the immigration office, to get the renewal done and have the new card.
